Welcome to Giant City School! This is going to be a fantastic school year. You will have the opportunity to receive an excellent education and to participate in many extra-curricular activities and programs. I expect to have an amazing school year with you and your family! Your teachers and I will work with you to help you become a prepared citizen, ready for high school and beyond. In return, we ask that you take your education seriously, behave in a manner that is expected of you, and make a sincere effort in all of your school activities. In addition, please remember the importance of being friendly and courteous to all students and staff members.
The purpose of this handbook is to ensure that you know and understand the policies, procedures and regulations that are necessary to promote the best educational setting possible. You must become familiar with the information presented in this handbook, as it is your responsibility to follow the guidelines that are established. These guidelines will be enforced with consistency.
Please remember that you have the privilege of determining your level of success and enjoyment at Giant City School. Your attitude, your behavior, your effort, your interests, and your involvement will determine your success. Strive to make wise choices, and always try to do your very best!
At Giant City School, we are dedicated to educational excellence! Let’s work together as a team to make this a fabulous school year!
Kindergarten has milk at snack time. Milk is available to grades 1 through 5 during snack and is available to everyone bringing sack lunches. One milk is included with each paid school lunch. Additional milk may be purchased in the lunch line each day. The cost per carton of milk is $.35. Snack milk is not covered under free and reduced price program.
Full Price Meals:
Lunch – $3.00
Breakfast – $1.60
Reduced Price Meals:
Lunch – $0.40
Breakfast – $0.30
Lunch – $3.50
Breakfast – $2.50
To decrease paperwork and discourage children from charging, please consider paying in advance for meals and milk each quarter. At the end of the year, extra milk or lunch money will be refunded or transferred to next school year or a bill will be sent home if money is due. We hope this makes it easier for you as well as for us. We realize this would not work for everyone, so please send money daily, weekly or monthly, if it is more convenient. As always, please send money in an envelope with your child’s name and what the money is for written on the outside. Checks can be made out to Giant City School. Parents/guardians are expected to keep lunch accounts current and accounts will not be allowed to accumulate beyond $50. If the balance is in excess of $100, it may be referred to a collection agency.
In the 2014-15 school year, the District moved to “Offer vs. Serve” for lunch choices. Students in 3rd through 8th grades will be given the option of refusing items served for lunch. Each student must take three (3) items with one item being a fruit or vegetable component in the hot lunch or salad bar.
FREE & REDUCED MEALS (Board Policy 4:130)
The Superintendent shall be responsible for implementing the District’s free and reduced-price food service policy.
The student’s eligibility for free and reduced meals shall be determined by the income eligibility guidelines, family-size income standards, set annually by the US Department of Agriculture and distributed by the Illinois State Board of Education. Information concerning conditions of eligibility for free or reduced lunch and application forms for such will be provided at the time of registration. Parents/guardians who feel they qualify for free or reduced price lunches for their children should complete the application form and return it to the office. The school district will verify the information on the application. Deliberate misrepresentation of the information may be subject to prosecution under State and Federal laws. Pupils who are eligible for either free or reduced lunch are also eligible for free or reduced breakfast.
